I Want To Lead a Group, But I Feel Inadequate – What Should I Do?

How to Overcome Feelings of Inadequacy

Are you on the fence about whether you want to lead a small group? Do you sense God calling you to lead a group yet you’re holding back from actually doing it because you feel inadequate? Even if you’re already a small group leader you might still wrestle with similar feelings.

If you can relate to this, first, you should know that you’re not alone. Many leaders feel inadequate about leading a group and it’s normal to doubt whether you have what it takes. The second thing you should know is that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Small group leaders like you are some of the most important people in the world. That’s because real life change happens in community. And your small group is that community, the place where people can form real relationships, get the support they need when going through a tough time, and most of all, draw closer to God. The fact is we all need community because all of us struggle with losing hope at some point in our lives.

In the book of Hebrews, God speaks through the Apostle Paul to encourage a group of people who were faltering and losing hope. He writes, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess…” (10:23)

Then, he speaks about the church – or small group: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…” (v. 24-25) It’s clear from this passage that when you open your home, lead a group, or facilitate a class you’re doing exactly what the Bible commands.

So when you step out and provide the leadership for authentic community, you can trust that the Holy Spirit will take the word of God and bring eternal transformation in your group members’ lives. Remember, as a Christ follower, it is not about how much ability you have – it’s your availability. In God’s strength, you can do this!
