God's Dream for Your Life

How to Get It, Keep It, and Give It Away

Generosity is about more than money; it’s about learning to live the way God designed—open-handed and free.

If someone asked you to describe yourself, would “generous” make the list? Not just in how you give financially, but in how you share your time, your attention, and your presence?

For many of us, generosity feels like something we’ll get to “someday”— when life settles down, when we have more margin, when we finally feel secure. But Jesus didn’t describe generosity as an optional virtue. He called it wisdom. He modeled a way of life where giving wasn’t just good; it was smart, joyful, and deeply spiritual.

I often tell people that generosity isn’t just about money. It’s about being smart and about living your life in a way that brings about the highest and best results for you and the greatest glory for God.

What if generosity isn’t something we do after we feel secure, but the very thing God uses to make us secure? What if living generously is how we learn to trust that God really is enough? Here are seven Bible verses about generosity that can completely change how you see generosity and how you live it.

7 Bible Verses about Generosity that Will Change Your Life

1. Luke 21:1-4

While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins.

“I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” Luke 21:1–4 (NLT)

Jesus saw the rich people give large sums, but a poor widow dropped in two small coins, which was everything she had to live on. In that moment, Jesus redefined generosity.

She didn’t give the biggest amount, but she gave in a way that changed her circumstances. Her gift meant trust. It meant letting go of control and believing God would come through. God doesn’t look at the size of what you give; He looks at what your giving says about your faith.

When we give in ways that stretch our trust, we discover what it means to depend on Him completely.

Take a moment and pray: Lord, teach me to give with a trusting heart. When I’m tempted to hold back, remind me that You see the sacrifice, not the size. Help me to depend on You completely, just like that widow did.

    2. 2 Corinthians 8:1-5—True generosity begins when we give ourselves to God.

Now I want you to know, dear brothers and sisters, what God in his kindness has done through the churches in Macedonia. They are being tested by many troubles, and they are very poor. But they are also filled with abundant joy, which has overflowed in rich generosity. For I can testify that they gave not only what they could afford, but far more. And they did it of their own free will.

They begged us again and again for the privilege of sharing in the gift for the believers in Jerusalem. They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do. (2 Corinthians 8:1–5 NLT)

    3. Proverbs 11:25—When you refresh others, God refreshes you.

“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:25 NLT)

There’s a rhythm built into the way God designed the world: when we give, we grow. When we pour into others, He pours back into us. It’s not a formula for wealth; it’s a promise of blessing.

God doesn’t bless generous people so they’ll have more. He blesses them so they can be more—more of a blessing, more of a reflection of His heart.

When you choose to refresh someone else, with a word of encouragement, a meal, or your time, you’ll find your own heart renewed in the process.

Here’s a simple way to pray: God, thank You for the way You’ve wired generosity into Your design. When I refresh others, refresh me too. Help me be a source of encouragement and blessing today

    4. Matthew 6:21—Your heart always follows your money.

Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” (Matthew 6:21 NLT)

If you want to know what matters most to you, look at where your money goes. Our spending always points to what we value.

That’s why Jesus told us this truth, not to make us feel guilty, but to help us understand something deeper. Wherever we invest our treasure, our hearts will eventually follow.

When we begin to invest in what matters to God, our hearts start to align with His. Over time, generosity shapes our priorities, our prayers, and our perspective.

Ask God to help you live this out: Lord, show me where my treasure really is. Align my heart with Yours so that what matters to You becomes what matters most to me. Use generosity to shape my desires and my direction.

    5. Romans 12:1—Generosity is a lifestyle, not a transaction.

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (Romans 12:1 NLT)

Generosity is about much more than giving money. It’s about surrendering every part of your life to God.

Some of the most generous people I’ve met don’t have much materially, but their lives are wide open. Their homes are open. Their schedules are flexible. Their hearts are available. Why? Because they’ve already offered themselves to God.

When you live surrendered, generosity flows naturally. It becomes a reflection of your worship.

Talk to God about this: Father, I surrender every part of my life to You. My time, my energy, my resources—all of it belongs to You. Let generosity flow naturally from a heart that’s already Yours. Teach me to live with open hands and an open heart.

6. Acts 20:35—Giving makes you more like Jesus.

“And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.‘” (Acts 20:35 NLT)

These words from Jesus aren’t just good advice; they’re spiritual truth. Giving is a pathway to joy because it makes us more like Him.

There’s a quiet power in generosity. It loosens fear’s grip. It changes our perspective. It transforms our hearts. When we live open-handed, we reflect the character of Christ Himself, the One who gave everything for us.

As you reflect, pray these words: Jesus, thank You for modeling what true giving looks like. Help me experience the joy that comes from serving and blessing others. Make me more like You each time I give.

7. Malachi 3:10—God invites you to test His faithfulness.

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, ‘I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!‘” (Malachi 3:10 NLT)

This is the only time in Scripture where God essentially challenges, “Go ahead, try Me.” He doesn’t invite us to test Him so we can get rich. He invites us to trust Him so we can see His faithfulness firsthand.

When we step out in faith and give, we open the door for God to show up in ways we never expected. His provision often looks different than what we imagine, but it always comes right on time.

Here’s a prayer to guide you: God, I choose to trust You with what I have. Strengthen my faith to give even when it feels risky. Show me Your faithfulness in ways that remind me You are always enough.

A Final Thought

You don’t become generous when you have more. You become generous when you believe God is enough.

I’ve said it many times, and it’s true: You never look more like Jesus than when you give.

So choose one of these verses. Read it slowly. Ask God what it means for you today. Then take a small step of obedience and watch how He begins to change your heart.

Generosity isn’t about losing—it’s about living. And when you live with open hands, you’ll discover the kind of freedom and joy that only comes from trusting God completely.
